Food for Kids is a service project proudly started by the Rockwall County Kiwanis Club a few years ago.
We were looking for a service project that would focus on the children in Rockwall County.? It was pointed out to us that there were many children in the RISD on the free and reduced meal program that had very little or nothing to eat over the weekends.? We determined to focus on these children and find a way to give them food for the weekend that would be both easy for them to prepare and food that they would want to eat.
Today our club provides 600+ food bags every month for children to take home on Fridays to have nutritious food over the weekend.
We serve the following Schools and organizations:
Boys & Girls Club
Helping Hands
Rochell Elementary? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Reinhardt Elementary
Dobbs Elementary? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Springer Elementary
Cullins Lake Pointe Elementary? ? ? ? ? ? Jones Elementary
Children are selected for this program by teachers, counselors, and staff who are familiar with their situations and know of the need.
The second Tuesday of each month our club meets to prepare these bags for distribution.? Food is purchased from Costco, sorted, and put in donated plastic bags.? The bags are then counted and put in tubs to be taken to the various locations to be given to the children.??If this is a project that you think you would like to support, we’d love to have you come help us on the second Tuesday of every month.? We also welcome financial support.? There are more children that need our help and the cost of food continues to increase.? Please contact one of our members or call our hotline at 972-722-6001 to discuss how you can be a part of this great program.
